Rebels begin practice with excitement
The West Monroe football team took the field to begin fall camp Wednesday.
The Rebels come into the 2018 season with high expectations due to having 13 total starters returning and some promising new starters such as junior quarterback Garrett Kahmann and linebacker Chandler Moncreif to name a few.
“Our kids are excited, and our coaches are excited,” West Monroe coach Jerry Arledge said. “As long as you can keep kids excited then they will have fun and not realize they are working hard.”
The team went through an 90 minute practice in the morning as they get started toward preparing for their first game action in a scrimmage against Scotlandville on August 17 at Louisiana College in Pineville.
One of the units that will be a talking point early on will be replacing five seniors on the offensive line.
“That was a special group (in 2017),” Offensive Coordinator Glenn Hunt said. “It gives these guys big shoes to fill. We have to grow-up in a hurry. We may struggle early in the year but I really think once we grow-up we can be good. We have to, as coaches, demand a game-tempo out of these guys everyday at practice.”
Hunt got a taste of what Kahmann could do when the then sophomore was put into the fire in the semifinals against Zachary and led the team on two touchdown drives.
“(Kahmann) has all the tools to be the best to ever play in that position here,” Hunt said. "We will use senior Carson Jones some at quarterback too. He adds a different dimension. He is very athletic and has a good arm.”
