WM set to take on Scotlandville
The West Monroe football team takes to the field and will look across enemy lines for the first time Friday.
The Rebels face the Scotlandville Hornets at 5:30 p.m. at Louisiana College in Pineville in a match-up of two of the top athletic programs in the state.
The dominant Scotlandville basketball program over the last decade has been well documented yet the Hornets have been dominate on the football as of late as well.
Scotlandville went 10-2 and reached the second-round of the Division I playoffs last season. Nationally-ranked John Curtis defeated Scotlandville 29-8 to end the Hornets’ season.
There are a lot of great players and positions to look forward to seeing this week. Here are three things to look for on Friday in Pineville:
1. Defense getting everything together
This 2018 West Monroe defense has gotten a lot of hype in the offseason. Nine returning starters and first-year transfer Chandler Moncrief at linebacker are certainly reason for excitement. Three key players (defensive linemen Andrew Gleason and Ethan Swanner as well as cornerback Brooks Miller) are coming off injuries and getting all the puzzle pieces to fit together is a science and takes some work.
Having one of the best coaching staffs around helps and this group is sure to make life miserable for opposing offenses.
2. A new look offense
There is much more uncertainty on offense with an entirely new offensive line and who is in the starting lineup there will be something to watch in front of junior quarterback Garrett Kahmann.
Kahmann and senior running back Cam Wright had plenty of big plays last season and will be leaned upon along with a veteran wide receiver group such as Michael Worley, Zach Murphy and Michael Hamburg to put things in motion.
3. Who will be the X-factor contributors of 2018
Who could be the next great punt returner for the Rebels? Time will tell. Junior Cayden Pierce and kicker Reece Aultman are a couple of players poised for a breakout season. How much will it show Friday is anyone’s guess.
